Digital Round Table Series:

Strategic Insights for Language Access Plans

Hosted by WeAmplifyIT and Avantpage Translations

Culturally and linguistically diverse communities are a powerful asset to local governments, fostering resilience, innovation, and deeper community engagement. However, without a clear language access strategy, public services risk unintentionally creating barriers that hinder participation, erode trust, and lead to inefficient government spending due to inadequate planning. This session examines how a well-crafted Language Access Plan can be a strategic tool to centralize service usage, formalize outreach, and effectively meet the needs of individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and disabilities. We will explore what it takes to create a comprehensive Language Access Plan through strategic planning, inclusive organizational practices, and accessibility-centered services.

Session Format:

In this first session of the "Digital Roundtable" series, our experts, Andrea Salazar and Claudia Burdisso, will lead an insightful and interactive discussion on the foundational elements of building, updating, and implementing a successful language access plan. Tailored for government professionals working in roles related to language access, community outreach, civil rights, and DEI, this 90-minute session will dive deep into strategies for ensuring equitable access to services for non-English-speaking communities. Andrea and Claudia will cover practical steps for creating new plans from the ground up, offer guidance on how to modernize older language access strategies, and explore best practices for executing these plans effectively within government and community organizations.

This session is designed to foster peer learning and provide actionable takeaways that participants can apply in their local contexts. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with colleagues from other states and cities, sharing challenges and successes while expanding their networks in this critical field of public service.

3 Takeaways:

  1. Acquiring Tools for Developing a Language Access Plan: Participants will gain practical tools and frameworks to begin developing a comprehensive language access plan tailored to their community's specific needs, ensuring legal compliance and inclusivity.
  2. Implementing Language Access Plans with Practical Toolkits: Attendees will explore actionable toolkits designed to support the successful implementation of language access plans, from securing resources to ensuring effective execution and monitoring progress.
  3. Building Community and Networking: Participants will have the opportunity to connect with peers from other states and cities, sharing experiences and challenges while expanding their professional network and fostering a community of practice.
